Abstract
To minimise the effect of aberrations introduced by the skull in transcranial ultrasound therapy To minimise the effect of aberrations introduced by the skull in transcranial ultrasound therapyapplications, targeting through the temporal bone window is proposed, exploiting its flat morphology and reduced thickness. In this work, an optimisation method for positioning the system transducer and holographic lens respect to the temporomandibular joint is proposed. For a flat transducer of 65 mm aperture and 650 kHz centre frequency, two possible orientations are considered, normal to the skull and normal to the skin. In a study on 12 patients, a 2.47% increase of the acoustic pressure at the focus and a 3.15% reduction of the remaining pressure in the skull is observed when defining a normal incidence to the skin with respect to the skull. This automatic positioning algorithm together with the appropriate mechanical coupling system represents a valuable tool for positioning ultrasound transducers through the skull.
