Abstract

In recent years, the usefulness of the application of focused ultrasound inside the brain for therapeutic purposes has been demonstrated. Thermal ablation has been used to develop treatments for essential tremor and Parkinson's disease, while moderate intensities are used for neuromodulation and opening of the blood-brain barrier, making it possible to administer drugs in a non-invasive, localized and reversible manner. However, the ultrasound beam suffers aberrations on its way to the central nervous system (CNS) due to the attenuation and scattering introduced by the skull. In addition, brain structures have a complex shape and distribution to which the ultrasound beam must be adapted.
