Abstract

Focused ultrasound simultaneously applied with microbubbles is a non-ionizing technique for neurodegenerative diseases treatment allowing the opening of the blood-brain barrier locally, transiently, non-invasively and safely. In this paper, we numerically study the propagation of ultrasound beams across the human skull using a 500 kHz single-element focused transducer. Aberrations through different areas of the skull are assessed as a function of the distance and incidence angle between transducer-skull, the robustness of the system is evaluated and, finally, a protocol for Alzheimer’s treatment is developed using a custom semi-adaptive algorithm, achieving a 73% of covering of the human brain hippocampus.
