Abstract
Vortex beams are currently used in many emerging applications, e.g., particle trapping or therapeutic ultrasound. However, current methods to synthesize these exotic beams cannot be applied to focus intense acoustic wavefronts in reflection mode. In this paper, we present the design equations and validation of several reflector topologies used to generate focused vortex beams. Using geometric methods, we derive parametric surfaces for helico-ellipsoidal vortex reflectors for use with electrohydraulic sources, and a helico-paraboloidal vortex reflector for use with electromagnetic cylindrical sources. The pressure gain, focal dimension and topological charge of the different vortex generators are explored and related to geometrical parameters. The results show that helico-ellipsoidal and helico-paraboloidal reflectors generate focused vortices efficiently. These surfaces can be applied to manipulate wavefronts with large mechanical amplitude, such as those used in therapeutic ultrasound applications such as lithotripsy for fragmentation of kidney or gallstones, histotripsy for mechanical ablation of soft tissues, and in applications of non-contact manipulation of particles, bubbles or tissues.
