Abstract

Spatial encoding, based on calculating the time-of-flight of photoacoustic signals recorded at multiple positions, is typically adopted to reconstruct photoacoustic tomography images. A simple and costeffective alternative based on temporal encoding can also be adopted, allowing a dramatic reduction in the number of sensing elements, even up to a single registration element. To perform the reconstruction process using a single waveform, replicas of the original signal are required. These can be generated through different strategies, such as scattering or reflecting elements, or through reverberant cavities. In this work, a reverberant cavity equipped with acoustic diffusers on its walls has been designed to maximize the angular spectrum of the recorded signals, thus improving the resolution of the reconstruction. A numerical simulation study has been carried out regarding the effect of the recording time and the size of the detector, analyzing the lateral and axial resolution and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the reconstructions. Results show that longer recording times improve both the lateral resolution and the SNR of the images until they become plateaued, however it has no great effect on the axial resolution. On the other hand, it is observed that smaller detectors improve the lateral resolution of the image, although it does not seem to have as much importance on the axial resolution or the SNR.
