Abstract
Many photoacoustic tomography (PAT) systems have been developed using classical linear ultrasonic probes. The use of these probes, although convenient, limits the resolution of tomographic reconstructions because the angular spectrum of the acoustic waves recorded by the sensor is very small. These limitations are partially compensated by using advanced reconstruction algorithms, such as Delay Multiply and Sum (DMAS) or Minimum Variance (MV), among others. The aim of this work is to evaluate whether these algorithms reliably represent the size of the objects, especially when considering objects whose size is similar to the resolution of the system. To do so, the lateral and axial resolution is initially evaluated from two nearby point objects that are separated until they can be distinguished as two independent sources in the reconstructed image. Subsequently, the size of objects of increasing sizes is determined by comparing the results of the different algorithms with the actual size of the objects. The results of this study shed light on the suitability of this type of algorithms to be used to determine sizes and morphology in photoacoustic images.
