Abstract
Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) technique use the ability of some materials (chromophores) to emit ultrasonic signals after being excited by pulsed light. It is a promising medical imaging technique with molecular contrast, better resolution than pure ultrasound imaging and greater tissue penetration than optical techniques. Classical ultrasonic linear phased arrays have been adapted for their use in PAT, however the use of non-enveloping sensors reduces the quality of the obtained PAT images, since the laser-generated acoustic signals are travelling in all directions in the 3D-space, which makes it necessary to use more complex beamformers. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the resolution of different beamformers in a PAT system with the acoustic resolution limitation of a linear probe.
