An elastic plate driven by a vertical force can develop a wide range of vibration patterns. These examples from three-dimensional elastodynamic FDTD simulations use a drive near the plate centre. The response depends on excitation frequency, plate properties, supports and damping.
Reading a vibration pattern
Regions of large transverse motion are separated by nodal lines with small displacement. In a traditional Chladni experiment, grains on a vibrating plate can accumulate near such nodes. Here, the animations show the computed plate motion, not a simulation of grains.
A driven response may contain several natural modes. Its shape should not automatically be identified with a single eigenmode unless the modal content has been established. Displacements are exaggerated for visibility.
Example responses
The original collection does not provide a complete frequency and boundary-condition specification for these examples. They are therefore presented as qualitative response patterns, without inferred resonance frequencies.
