Abstract

Photoacoustic imaging allows obtaining molecular and functional images in any biological medium. Using endogenous contrasts is possible to study natural processes and using exogenous chromophores, typically gold nanoparticles, it is possible to improve the quality of the images obtained or even use them as markers of specific pathophysiological targets. In this work we explored the wide range of chromophores used in photoacoustic imaging, especially delving into the feasibility of using nanoparticles of covalent organic networks (nCOFs) as biocompatible and completely harmless exogenous contrast agents. For this purpose, the response of two types of nCOFs has been compared with the current standard. The results obtained point to both types of nCOFs as very promising contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging due to their satisfactory response and biocompatibility. The use of biocompatible nCOFs will make it possible to obtain high quality molecular images using high contrast doses and minimizing side effects.
